Ahh, I should’ve included Morelia....

I’d like to do a road trip like this, start in one of the most industrious cities, across the lowlands and into the Pacific Ocean for a drive on the pacific highways, and back up through the mountains and into one of the oldest city in North America to finish. give me a couple of weeks to enjoy the places I’d visit.

Of those routes I only know the 57D (To Santiago de Queretaro) and the 7D (To Valle de Bravo) D means toll road.

But look at these motherfucking views, and this is just 5 minutes with street view!:

Kinja'd!!!

San miguel de Allende, Western entry

Kinja'd!!!

Valle de Bravo to Toluca highway

Kinja'd!!!

Tequila to Guadalajara

Kinja'd!!!

Colima to Zihuatanejo

Its a real shame that Mexico is obscenely dangerous, specially parts of the lowlands and a lot of Michoacan, definitely dangerous enough for me not to even bother despite it looking like quite a cultural and enjoyable tour of the southwestern portion of my country.

I want to do an eastern province road trip, hitting every provincial capital from Toronto eastwards, and then finish off the trip with a ferry ride to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, which is French territory just off the coast of Newfoundland. One day I’ll finally do it.

I think that scheduling must be harder in Canada because winter might make it a lot harder due to the weather! but it seems like an amazing plan! If I was doing Canada, I’d probably do from Toronto to Ottawa, and I know that’s a very small part of Canada and there’s a lot more to see but its still fascinating!

I wouldn’t want to do a ferry ride from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland in the winter, that’s for sure.

If you were doing a small part of Canada, I’d suggest Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec City. Two of those cities are absolutely awful for traffic (Toronto and Montreal), but once you park the car, there’s plenty to do.

hmm, a Russian superhighway?

it would seem like a mess to me, like... why?

You could try to build a highway specially designed for cargo trucks that are massive, just like, 5m wide and powered by very efficient engines... but even then boats are already quite great at that! so are trains!

I remember the last time I was in Toronto my mom crashed into a pole near down town... I drived the rest of the trip...

You guys are fast drivers! I mean, doing 140, 150s, even with the huge signs saying that speeding over 150 is a multi thousand dollar ticket!

Those four cities seem quite a treat! I’d also want to do part of the western side (the south portion of the Sea to Sky highway is amazing!) I really wanna ski in Canada again....

I haven’t been to Vancouver and Whistler in about twelve years and I miss it. It’s a lovely place.

Yeah, Toronto is kind of stupid when it comes to drivers. 50 km/h over the speed limit is an immediate roadside license suspension and a vehicle seizure, but it’s relatively common. When I lived there, I was in the right lane doing 115 and people would still try to run me off the road.

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > CB

I had semis breathing down my neck... doing 125. You do have great highways, very smooth.. but still your drivers scared me.

But Vancouver, man its amazing.... and people in Whistler are very nice.. and all of them have pot (not that I do pot, I know because they offered it to me.. all the time... I guess its a side effect of being a snowboarder) The only issue with Vancouver was that there was a horrific amount of traffic back to the airport!

Not too crazy, but I’m going to attempt to drive my Mustang in the rest of the 48 contiguous states this year. I’ll break it up into a few different road trips. The road trip above will knock out eleven more states, approximately 2200 miles, and I should be able to do it over a weekend... although I may have to add a day to that if my wife wants to ride along.

Sometimes hometowns hide amazing highways and roads from us... like the Ou-212 in the case of my grandparent’s village! or the old highway to Valle de Bravo which is also intense!

and how’s car culture in Colombia? I don’t think we got many Alfas here in Mexico like the one you showed (or in fact, any Alfa)... plus, up until 1994 getting interesting european or asian cars here was virtually impossible due to the restrictive import laws, so our car culture is still adjusting to the wonders of the free market... is there any old car you’re giving a good look at over there in Colombia?

I’m in the US. I just go back to visit. I’ve driven plenty of nice older cars. I drove a 159, for example.

As for actually old cars, E21s and E30s are common. You’ll see them very often, which is great for me. The car culture in my country is pretty good, but higher taxes prevent people from importing a lot of extremely high end cars. We have like two Aventadors, a few 458 Specials, several 488s, and a Huracan or two. We have a DB6 and a Bentley 4.5 litre as well. It’s improving slowly but surely.

I did a round trip from San Diego to Northern Oregon and back (40 hrs driving round trip). I was the solo driver. It’s nuts because you pass through LA, Oakland, AND Bakersfield. Ain’t nobody want to go there! Infact I did stay in Bakerfield twice because I left after work and couldn’t go longer than 10 hours on the way home. I paid 130$ for my hotels and yet still somebody committed suicide (poor soul, don’t mean to put them down but it was not something that normally happens) in one and there was a manhunt in the other. Loved the Redwoods and the Oregon coast! It even snowed while I was there. I was also passed by a greyhound bus while traveling 85 on the Redwoods highway.

I think you should visit San Miguel de Allende, it is a beautiful place and theres a lot of stuff to do, eat, and watch! primarily most of the people there speak English and it is a rather safe town (if expensive) Quite frankly I doubt you can go wrong there, plus its rather near Santiago de Queretaro. Just makes sure every single vehicle you take is official (has federal tourist plates or local authorized taxi plates) Never hail down a cab and unless you ride public transport with a local you trust, don’t use it, always ask receptionists at the restaurant/hotel/or office to call a cab for you, specially in San Miguel because uber hasn’t gotten there yet.

I suspect you can spend quite a nice day there, I’d even recommend staying a night and getting help from the locals... whatever your line of work is, there’s something to impress you there in design, fashion, cuisine, architecture, and other stuff. I wish I could give you more tips but when I was there I didn’t really pay attention to the names of the places... I know Fabrica la Aurora might be worth a visit but only if you’re a real art geek, if not I’d stay downtown.

Foreigners are safe in those areas*, specially San Miguel , generally... you need to be extremely dumb or extremely racist to actually get in trouble as a foreigner. As far as Santiago de Queretaro goes... damn... I can’t remember the last time I went...

*: Touristic areas, expensive cities, interstate highways, airports, etc.

When I referred to unsafe places in my road trip, I meant more like Jalisco and Michoacan, which, again, in those areas* its perfectly safe for a foreigner, but most of my routes are through small national roads that can be troublesome

Finisterre was thought to be the end of the world; the most westernly point, and where the Santiago de Compostela route formally ends.

You supposedly needed to leave all your clothes at the cliffs and jump to the ocean, as a symbol of rebirth.

I want to drive from Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD. For two reasons.

First is that I’m a damn dirty dubber who wants to go to H2Oi. But the second reason is better.

My sister would always comment on the “Ocean City, MD - 3,073mi” sign you see on I-80 coming into Sacramento from the West (headed Eastbound) and always said that she wanted to do that trip just to see if there’s a Sacramento, CA sign 3,073mi away and within Ocean City, MD.

But, my sister got in a car accident. Nudged off the freeway by a trucker, nose went into a drainage ditch and her ‘87 Olds 88 Custom Cruiser went ass-over-teakettle before landing on it’s roof. She survived the impact but had a stroke while in hospital and is now quadriplegic. One of the few car-related things she wanted to do, she can’t. But I can.

I want to drive across the country on I-80. Bring my camera along and chronicle the journey so I can bring it home and show my sister the trip and, most importantly, sate our collective curiosity about that damn sign.

(And before anybody says it, yes, I know there is in fact a Sacramento, CA sign within Ocean City, MD. But I wanna see it in person.)

I’ve already had some pretty epic road trips, with the crown jewel being when I took 26 days and went coast-to-coast across the U.S. and back. It ended up being an 8,800 mile (14,200 km) trip and required two parking lot oil changes along the way. This was the map for that one:

My dream is to go even bigger and crazier and do the National Park lap of the country. 14,500 miles (23,350 km) and 47 incredible national parks

I’ve already been to seven of the parks on the route, but I’d love to go back to all of them.

Thanks, that looks like a really good option. I’d been thinking of flying down to Cancun (there’s a cheap direct flight) and going diving, but this looks better.

I’m not super paranoid about safety - I’ve spent a bit of time in Mexico, have enough Spanish to muddle through, and I’m not an idiot or a redneck. But I’m not keen on driving there - too many Latinos are crazy drivers. Plus there seem to be a lot of spots where it’s not a great idea to stop, and they’re not all obvious without local knowledge.

if was going to do such a trip I’d probably honestly take a brand new wk2 jeep grand Cherokee with the summit pack and the v8. Its a thirsty motherfucker but it might as well be the only car in all of America that you can service across the entire continent because most police departments use v8 chargers! plus, the v8 is such a barn-door type engine that you really shouldn’t worry about reliability issues. Wow, that is looking good! You can make a road trip through the south and pick up the majority of those. Might I suggest a coast-to-coast run from Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA? That can be done in 2 days (or less). North Dakota and Michigan appear to be off the beaten path, though...

Kinja'd!!! Dusty Ventures > Stephenson Valve Gear
01/13/2018 at 16:42

Kinja'd!!!0

That would be Wisconsin, not Michigan. As for the coast to coast run, there’s three problems. 1) it would take me a day just to get to Florida to start it, 2) I would, of course, need to drive back, which would be another three-four days, and 3) I’ve done the coast-to-coast run enough times that doing it as a speed run has zero appeal to me. I’ve been to all of the lower 48, and 46 of them by car, they just haven’t all been in my current car. I’ll get there eventually, but it’ll be on my terms, when I can enjoy the drive.

Ironically I’ll be driving through Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky at the end of the month, but it won’t be in my primary car.

Kinja'd!!! Stephenson Valve Gear > Dusty Ventures
01/13/2018 at 17:30

Kinja'd!!!1

A) Doh! Wisconsin... yep.

B) Yes, the problem with doing any kind of coast-to-coast run is that if a person drives from home to one coast, then does the C2C run, then drives back home, it is really two coast-to-coast runs. Our 2017 NY-2-LA took 4-1/2 days for that reason. Our 2016 run from Florida to CA was part of a vacation that included visiting friends on the east side of the country before the run, and a number of friends on the west side of the country after. That was close to two weeks, a long (for me) vacation.
